Teens Caught For 'Inexcusable' Attack On Woman At Boston MBTA Station: DA

An 18-year-old from Jamaica Plain has been ordered to conditional home confinement after being charged with an unprovoked attack on a 21-year-old woman at a Boston train station, officials said.

Saul Diaz was charged on Monday, May 1 with unarmed robbery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for the attack that happened on Thursday, April 27, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office reports.

The woman told MBTA Police that she was on an outbound Red Line train when she saw a group of teenagers arguing with someone. One girl eventually looked at the woman and said, “What the (expletive) are you looking at," according to the DA's Office.

When the same girl and Diaz got off the train at Broadway, they took a bag of groceries from the woman and dumped it on the station platform.

They then picked some items up and threw them at the woman, the DA's Office reports. The woman was hit in the nose with a pear and was taken to Tufts Medical Center for treatment.

“This is inexcusable conduct that can undermine the public’s confidence in its ability to use public transportation safely and efficiently," Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said.

"Public transportation is crucial to the economic viability of our region, and when something like this happens—a passenger being set upon, unprovoked, and wounded in the process—it’s an assault not just on them, but on the entire system," he continued.

Using descriptions provided by the woman and surveillance footage, police identified Diaz and the 16-year-old girl as the suspects in the attack. They were arrested on Friday, the DA's Office said.

Diaz was released on personal recognizance but ordered to weekday home confinement from 4 p.m. to 6 a.m. except for the purpose of going to school. Diaz was also ordered to not loiter at Broadway Station and he must return to court for a probably cause hearing on June 21.

Meanwhile, the 16-year-old girl was arraigned on charges of unarmed robbery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in Boston Juvenile Court on Monday, the DA's Office added.

The teenager was later released on personal recognizance to her parents and ordered her to have no contact with the woman, stay away from Diaz, and to not use MBTA services except for going to and from school.
